Football Head Impacts

What type of collisions cause concussions on the playing field? This has been at the crux of our center’s scientific studies on head impact biomechanics with the UNC Athletics football program in a partnership rooted in 17 years of collaboration dedicated to improving the health and safety of our student-athletes at Carolina and across the world. We have studied this in several ways and across many sports. We are happy to partner with the National Football League on advancing this research area. We joined this partnership last year, in 2021. Details for that are available in the university’s full press release written by University Communications at the time: https://uncnews.unc.edu/2021/11/23/carolina-tarheels-use-high-tech-mouthguards-to-measure-on-field-head-impacts/.

We are pleased to see this program expand in 2022 to now include 8 total programs, and welcome our colleagues at the University of Georgia (Matthew Gfeller Center alum Drs. Julianne Schmidt and Robert Lynall leading their effort), University of Florida, University of Pittsburgh, and Vanderbilt University. The National Football League’s press release can be read here.

WRAL’s local news coverage for our announcement last year is available here.
